Låta (Letting and Allowing)
Use the causative verb låta to express letting or allowing someone to do something. The person being permitted (the object) is followed directly by a bare infinitive (an infinitive verb without the marker att).
| The strict parents do not let their son skip the chores. | De stränga föräldrarna låter inte sin son slippa sysslorna. |
| We let the friends make noise in the garden. | Vi låter kompisarna väsnas i trädgården. |
Få (Making and Causing)
Use få to express making or causing someone to do something. Unlike låta, this construction requires the infinitive marker att before the second verb.
| She makes the children do the chores. | Hon får barnen att sköta sysslorna. |
| The dad makes him wash the car. | Pappan får honom att tvätta bilen. |
Responsibilities and Permissions
These verbs are especially useful when discussing rules, negotiating responsibilities, and granting household permissions.
| She lets us negotiate about the strict rules. | Hon låter oss förhandla om de stränga reglerna. |
| I let the independent child take the responsibility. | Jag låter det självständiga barnet ta ansvaret. |
