Questions & Answers about Eftersom han inte är representant, är han inte medlem.
Why is there no translation for 'a' before representant and medlem?
In English, we say 'a representative' and 'a member'. However, in Swedish, when you state someone's profession, nationality, or formal role (like an affiliation) using the verb är, you drop the article en or ett. Since being a representative or a member is considered a formal role, we leave out the article here.
Why does inte come before the verb in han inte är but after the verb in är han inte?
The first half of the sentence starts with Eftersom, making it a subordinate clause (a supporting clause that cannot stand alone). In Swedish subordinate clauses, the word inte must come before the verb. The second half is the main clause, which uses standard word order where inte comes after the verb.
Why does the second part start with the verb är instead of han?
This is the V2 rule in action! In a Swedish main clause, the verb must be in the second position. The entire first part of the sentence (Eftersom han inte är representant) acts as position number one. Therefore, the verb är must be the very next word after the comma, pushing the subject han to the third position.
Could I use därför att instead of eftersom at the start of this sentence?
Not naturally. While both mean 'because' or 'since', eftersom is the right choice when you put the reason at the very beginning of the sentence. The phrase därför att is usually placed in the middle of a sentence to explain a statement that came right before it.
