Questions & Answers about Jag gillar den nya filmen.
Why does it say den (the) and also add -en to the end of filmen?
This is a classic Swedish rule called double definiteness. When you have a definite noun (the film) and an adjective (new), you must use the free-standing article den (or det or de) before the adjective AND keep the definite ending -en (or -et) on the noun itself. It literally translates to 'the new the-film'.
Why is the adjective nya instead of ny?
Because the noun is in a definite phrase (the new film), the adjective must also take its definite form. For almost all Swedish adjectives, you just add -a to the end to make the definite form, so ny becomes nya.
Can I use tycker om instead of gillar here?
Yes, absolutely! Jag tycker om den nya filmen means exactly the same thing. Gillar is just a bit shorter and slightly more casual, but both are extremely common in everyday Swedish.
How would this sentence change if I liked a new ett-word instead, like huset (the house)?
You would need to change the first article to match the ett-word. Instead of den, you would use det, making it: Jag gillar det nya huset. The adjective nya stays exactly the same, because the definite adjective ending is -a for both en-words and ett-words!
