Questions & Answers about Flickan lånar trollstaven, men hon använder den inte.
Why is it använder den inte instead of använder inte den?
This is the object pronoun shift. When you have a short, unstressed object pronoun like den (it), it jumps in front of inte. If it were a full noun instead of a pronoun, inte would come first, like in hon använder inte trollstaven.
Why do we use den for 'it' here instead of det?
The pronoun has to match the gender of the noun it replaces. Since it replaces trollstaven (an en-word), we must use den. If it were replacing an ett-word, like äpplet (the apple), we would use det.
How does the word trollstaven break down?
It is a compound word made of troll (magic or troll) and stav (wand, staff, or stick). The -en at the end is the definite suffix, making it 'the magic wand'.
Why does the word order stay the same after men?
The word men (but) is a coordinating conjunction. This means it simply connects two independent main clauses. The second clause starts fresh with the normal subject-verb order: hon (subject) followed by använder (verb).
