Why do we use es here instead of está? Isn't Mexico a location?
Even though Mexico is a place, we are describing a characteristic of the city (that it is grande / big). We use es (from ser) for descriptions and characteristics. You would use está (from estar) if you were talking about its location, such as answering the question "¿Dónde está la capital?" (Where is the capital?).
If I wanted to ask "Where is the capital of Mexico?", which question word from this lesson would I use?
You would use dónde (where): "¿Dónde está la capital de México?". You use dónde to ask for a location. You wouldn't use adónde (to where) or de dónde (from where) because you aren't talking about movement to a place or asking about origin.
