Why do we use hay here instead of está?
We use hay (there is) because we are talking about the existence of an unspecific object (una mesa - a table). If we wanted to talk about where a specific table is located (like "The big table is in the dining room"), we would use a form of estar: La mesa grande está en el comedor.
Would we change hay if there were two big tables in the dining room?
No! A great thing about hay is that it means both "there is" and "there are". It never changes for plural objects. If there were two tables, you would simply say Hay dos mesas grandes without changing the verb at all.
Why is it mesa grande and not grande mesa?
In Spanish, descriptive words (adjectives) usually come right after the noun they describe. Instead of saying "big table", you literally say "table big" (mesa grande).
If mesa is a feminine word, why doesn't grande end in an "a"?
Most adjectives change their ending to match the gender of the noun (like rojo vs roja). However, adjectives that end in "-e" in their base dictionary form are neutral. You use grande for both masculine and feminine nouns without changing its ending.
