Why do both morada and nueva end in -a?

Adjectives in Spanish must match the noun they describe in gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural). Because mesa is a feminine singular noun, the dictionary forms of these adjectives, morado and nuevo, both change their ending to -a.

Does nueva still have to match mesa even though it is separated by the verb es?

Yes! Even when an adjective comes after a verb like es (is), it is still describing the subject of the sentence. Therefore, nueva must be feminine and singular to match la mesa.

Why do we use es instead of está to say the table is new?
