Questions & Answers about En la mina de carbón, uno respira polvo negro.
In previous lessons we learned the impersonal se. Could we say se respira polvo negro instead of uno respira?
Yes, se respira polvo negro is perfectly natural and means 'black dust is breathed' or 'people breathe black dust'. Using uno makes the statement slightly more personal. The speaker is putting themselves in the shoes of the miners or including themselves in the general experience, whereas the impersonal se is a bit more emotionally detached.
If the person speaking is a woman, should she say una respira instead of uno respira?
Why is it mina de carbón? Doesn't Spanish have a specific adjective for 'coal'?
Spanish doesn't normally stack nouns like English does (coal + mine). To modify a noun with another noun, you must link them with de, literally 'mine of coal'. You already know this from everyday phrases like taza de café (coffee cup), but it's important to remember it applies to technical and industrial terms too.
Why isn't there an article before polvo negro (like el polvo negro)?
Because polvo negro is an unspecified amount of an uncountable substance. Just like in English, when you talk about an unquantified mass noun as a direct object (breathing dust, drinking water, eating bread), you drop the article.
