Questions & Answers about Tu papá es el doctor.
Why doesn't "Tu" have an accent mark in this sentence?
In Spanish, tu without an accent mark means "your", like in tu papá. If it has an accent mark (tú), it means the person "you" (as in tú eres, "you are").
What happens if I forget the accent mark on "papá"?
The accent mark changes the meaning entirely! Papá with the accent means "dad". Without it, la papa means "the potato". So tu papa would mean "your potato"!
I've learned that we don't use "un" or "el" with professions. Why is it "el doctor" here?
It is true that you usually drop the article when simply stating someone's job, like Él es doctor (He is a doctor). However, here we are identifying him as a specific person: the doctor. Because we are pointing him out specifically, we need to include el.
