Why is five hundred quinientos instead of cincocientos?
Just like English has irregular numbers (we say fifty, not fivety), Spanish has a few irregular hundreds. Instead of combining cinco and cientos, you have to memorize the special word quinientos. Other irregular hundreds to look out for are 700 (setecientos) and 900 (novecientos).
Why is it teléfono nuevo and not nuevo teléfono?
In Spanish, descriptive words (adjectives) like nuevo usually come right after the noun they describe. So instead of saying new phone, you literally say phone new (teléfono nuevo).
The dictionary says to cost is costar. Why is it spelled cuesta here?
Costar is a stem-changing verb. When you use it for a singular thing like a phone, the o in the middle changes to ue. That is why it becomes cuesta instead of costa.
Why does dólares end in -es?
To make a word plural in Spanish, you look at its last letter. If it ends in a vowel, you just add -s. But because dólar ends in a consonant (the letter r), you must add -es to make it plural.
