Numbers 30 to 1000 (treinta, cien, mil)

Now that you know how to count to 39, learning the rest of the numbers up to 1000 is just a matter of learning the new base words and stacking them together!

The Tens (40 to 90)

Just like the thirties, the tens from 40 to 90 are joined to single digits using the word y (and) as three separate words (for example, cuarenta y cinco). Notice that all of these tens end in -enta.

One Hundred and the Hundreds

The number 100 exactly is cien. However, when counting from 101 to 199, you must use ciento instead (for example, ciento uno or ciento diez).

For the rest of the hundreds, you generally combine the single digit with -cientos. Pay special attention to the irregular forms for 500 (quinientos), 700 (setecientos), and 900 (novecientos).

300trescientos800ochocientos
400cuatrocientos900novecientos

Important: Unlike the tens, the hundreds from 200 to 900 change their endings to match the gender of the noun they describe. You will use -os for masculine nouns and -as for feminine nouns (for example, doscientos hombres vs. trescientas mujeres).

I need one hundred dollars or two hundred pesos.
Necesito cien dólares o doscientos pesos.
The new phone costs five hundred dollars.
El teléfono nuevo cuesta quinientos dólares.

One Thousand and Large Numbers

The word for 1,000 is mil. Unlike in English, you do not say "un mil" for one thousand; it is simply mil. For 2,000 or 3,000, you say dos mil or tres mil.

When composing larger numbers, you just stack the words in order from largest to smallest! Remember that the word y is only used between the tens and the ones. You do not use it between hundreds and tens, or thousands and hundreds.
