Why does the word pájaros have an accent mark on the first "a"?
That accent mark tells you which part of the word to stress when you speak. You emphasize the first part: PAH-ha-ros. If it didn't have that written mark, the default rules of Spanish pronunciation would make you stress the second-to-last syllable instead (pa-HA-ros).
