Learn Spanish (Latin America): ¿Por qué estudias español?

When asking "why" in a question, Spanish uses por qué (two words, with an accent on the é). When you want to answer a question with "because", you will use the word porque (one word, no accent).

Where are the words for "do" and "you" in this Spanish sentence?

In Spanish, you never use a helper word like "do" to ask a question. Also, the ending of the verb tells us who is doing the action. The -as ending in estudias already means "you study", so the word tú (you) can be safely left out.

If I wanted to include the word for "you" (tú) anyway, where would it go?

You can put it right after the question word (¿Por qué tú estudias español?) or after the verb (¿Por qué estudias tú español?). However, leaving it out completely is usually the most natural choice!

Why isn't español capitalized like "Spanish" is in English?

Unlike English, Spanish does not capitalize the names of languages or nationalities. So, the word for "Spanish" is written with a lowercase letter as español.
