Indefinite articles (un, una)

"A" or "An": un and una

In English, we use "a" or "an" to talk about general or unspecified things. In Spanish, these are called indefinite articles.

Because all Spanish nouns have a gender, the word for "a" or "an" changes to match the noun.

Use un before masculine nouns:

a, an (masculine)
un
I have a car.
Yo tengo un carro.

Use una before feminine nouns:

a, an (feminine)
una
She buys a computer.
Ella compra una computadora.
The boy needs a bicycle.
El niño necesita una bicicleta.

Using Multiple Articles

When you talk about more than one thing in a sentence, each noun needs its own matching article.

I buy a gift and a book.
Compro un regalo y un libro.
The girl reads a letter and a book.
La niña lee una carta y un libro.
You buy a car, but I need a bicycle.
Tú compras un carro, pero yo necesito una bicicleta.
