Making Things Massive with "-azo"
In Spanish, you can emphasize the huge size or intensity of a noun by adding an evaluative suffix instead of using a separate adjective.
To say something is massive or to describe a heavy hit, drop the noun's final vowel (if it has one) and add the suffix -azo. For example, un premio (a prize) becomes un premiazo (a massive jackpot).
| The bettor won a massive jackpot on the slot machine. | El apostador ganó un premiazo en la tragamonedas. |
Expressing Poor Quality with "-ucho"
When you want to describe a place as run-down, cheap, or sketchy, use the pejorative (derogatory) suffix -ucho (or -ucha for feminine nouns).
Adding this to bar gives you un barucho (a cheap bar), immediately painting a picture of a less-than-glamorous location.
| While we played in that cheap bar, luck changed. | Mientras jugábamos en ese barucho, el azar cambió. |
Huge Amounts and Bets with "-ón"
Another very common augmentative suffix is -ón. It also expresses that something is huge or intense.
When you add -ón to a feminine noun, the new "huge" version often becomes masculine. For example, la apuesta (the bet) becomes el apuestón (the huge bet).
| However, he made a huge bet and ended the streak. | Sin embargo, él hizo un apuestón y terminó la racha. |
High Stakes at the Casino
These suffixes are incredibly flexible and add colorful emphasis to your stories, whether you are talking about suffering a heavy blow (un golpazo) on the casino felt, sleeping in a cheap hotel (un hotelucho), or losing a huge amount of money (un dinerón).
| He was sleeping in a cheap hotel when bankruptcy arrived. | Él dormía en un hotelucho cuando llegó la bancarrota. |
| They fleeced the man with a huge hit on the felt. | Desplumaron al hombre con un golpazo en el tapete. |
| By chance, she lost a huge amount of money and accepted bankruptcy. | Por azar, ella perdió un dinerón y aceptó la bancarrota. |
Once you master these suffixes, you can easily mix and match them to describe both the highs and lows of a night of gambling.
| With that massive jackpot, I would have money to leave this cheap motel. | Con ese botazo, tendría dinero para salir de este motelucho. |
