Questions & Answers about Если бы мы купили глобус, то мы бы знали всё о материке и реке Волге.

Why does Волге change its ending to match реке?

Both реке (the generic word for river) and Волге (the specific proper name) are in the prepositional case. In Russian, when a well-known, declinable geographical name matches the gender of its generic noun (both are feminine here), they usually decline together in apposition.

Would it be grammatically correct to say о реке Волга instead?

For familiar native rivers like the Volga, it sounds unnatural not to decline the name. Keeping the name in the nominative (о реке Волга) is typically reserved for obscure foreign rivers, names that do not easily decline, or strict military and official contexts where exact uninflected names prevent confusion.

Could we drop the word то in the second half of the sentence?

Yes, то (then) is optional in если бы ... (то) ... structures. Using it simply makes the logical connection between the condition and the result a bit more structured or emphatic.

Russian conditionals use the past tense form, so how do we know if знали means 'would know' (present) or 'would have known' (past)?

Context! Because the conditional particle бы always pairs with the past tense verb form (купили, знали) regardless of when the event happens, you have to rely on logic. Here, buying the globe is a missed past event, but knowing the geography is an ongoing present result.
