Questions & Answers about Никогда здесь не паркуйся, не то оштрафуют.
What exactly does не то mean here, and could I use а то instead?
Не то means "otherwise" or "or else," and it is used to introduce a negative consequence. In this context of a warning or threat, you can absolutely swap it with а то—they function exactly the same way here.
Why is the verb паркуйся in the imperfective aspect?
In Russian, negative commands (telling someone not to do something) almost always use the imperfective aspect. Even though you are warning them about a specific, one-time action right here, "do not park" must be the imperfective не паркуйся.
Why does "to park" have the reflexive -ся ending here?
When you talk about parking generally, without stating a direct object, you use the reflexive verb парковаться. If you wanted to specify what shouldn't be parked by adding a direct object, you would use the non-reflexive version: не паркуй машину (don't park the car).
Why is оштрафуют conjugated in the "they" form when the translation says "you'll get fined"?
This is an indefinite-personal construction. By using the third-person plural ("they will fine") without a specific subject like "the police," Russian expresses the equivalent of the English passive voice ("you will be fined").
