Questions & Answers about Осенний оттенок кажется скучным. Тем не менее сейчас он очень актуальный.
How does тем не менее work here as a contrast marker?
Тем не менее translates to "nevertheless" or "even so." It introduces a fact that is true despite what was just said. It specifically highlights that the second statement is surprising or unexpected given the first one.
What is the literal meaning behind the phrase тем не менее?
It literally translates to "by that no less." Тем is the instrumental case of то (that), and менее means "less." You can think of it as saying the second fact is "no less true because of that first fact."
Does актуальный mean "actual" in English?
No, this is a classic false friend. In Russian, актуальный means "current," "relevant," or "trendy." If you want to say "actual" in the sense of "real," you would use words like настоящий or фактический.
Why is скучным in the instrumental case, but актуальный is in the nominative?
Скучным is instrumental because it follows the verb кажется (seems), which requires this case for subjective perceptions or states. In the second sentence, актуальный describes the subject он with the hidden present-tense verb "is," which typically takes the nominative case for direct descriptions.
