Пусть моряк расскажет об океане!

Questions & Answers about Пусть моряк расскажет об океане!

Why do we use the future tense verb расскажет for a command?
The word пусть (let) combined with a 3rd-person verb creates a third-person command or strong wish. With пусть, we always use the regular present or future tense forms, rather than the standard imperative form like расскажи.
Our current lesson covers the "general factual" imperfective. Why did we use the perfective расскажет here instead of the imperfective рассказывает?
The "general factual" imperfective is mostly a past-tense concept used to simply state the fact that an action occurred. Here, we are giving a command for a specific, complete action to be delivered in the future. For a focused, one-time result, the perfective is required. If we used пусть рассказывает, it would change the meaning to "Let him be telling" or "Let him tell (habitually)."
Why is it об океане instead of just о океане?
Just like "a" becomes "an" in English before a vowel, the preposition о (about) changes to об when the following word starts with a vowel sound (like the "o" in океане). This prevents two vowels from clashing and makes pronunciation much smoother.
Could we use пускай instead of пусть in this sentence?
Yes! Пускай is a perfectly valid alternative here and carries the exact same meaning. It is slightly more colloquial and conversational than пусть, but native speakers use both interchangeably for third-person commands.
