Question 1

Why do we need То, что at the beginning instead of just Что?

Accepted Answer

In English, we can sometimes start a sentence with 'That we met...' but in Russian, you usually need a pointer pronoun in the main clause to attach the subordinate что clause to. То, что translates to 'The fact that'. The pronoun То acts as the grammatical subject of the main sentence.

Question 2

How does the use of То here relate to identity pronouns like тот же самый?

Accepted Answer

While our current lesson covers тот же самый (the exact same), which functions as an adjective phrase to compare identical things, the То here is a standalone demonstrative pronoun meaning 'that (fact/thing)'. You wouldn't use тот же самый because we aren't pointing out identical objects, just referencing the event itself.

Question 3

Why is there a dash and это before поразительное совпадение?

Accepted Answer

The dash and это are used because we are equating two things: the subject (the entire idea of То, что мы встретились случайно) and the predicate noun (совпадение). Since the verb 'to be' is omitted in the present tense, this structure acts as an equal sign making the sentence flow clearly.

Question 4

Could I use the imperfective verb встречались instead of the perfective встретились?

Accepted Answer

You need the perfective встретились because the sentence describes a single, completed event with a clear result. The imperfective встречались would mean you 'used to meet' regularly or 'were dating', which contradicts the idea of an accidental, one-time coincidence.
