Exact identity (тот же самый, один и тот же)

To express "the exact same" or "one and the same" in Russian, use one of two interchangeable phrases: один и тот же or тот же самый.

In both phrases, the core pronouns decline to match the gender, number, and case of the noun they describe. The emphatic particle же, however, never changes.

The Base Forms

Here are the base (Nominative) forms across genders and numbers:

Gender / Number"One and the same""The exact same"
Masculineодин и тот жетот же самый
Feminineодна и та жета же самая
Neuterодно и то жето же самое
Pluralодни и те жете же самые

Notice how both одна and та match the feminine noun рутина (routine) in this example:

In the mornings we have the exact same monotonous routine.
По утрам у нас одна и та же однообразная рутина.

Declining the Phrases

When these phrases change case, remember that both declinable words change. For example, as a direct object (Accusative case), the feminine та же самая becomes ту же самую.

For inanimate masculine nouns, the Accusative form is identical to the Nominative. Let's see both phrases used interchangeably to describe a wardrobe clash:

Neuter Forms

For neuter nouns, use одно и то же and то же самое.

It is strange to hear the exact same expression from you.
Странно слышать от вас то же самое выражение.

Plural Forms

For multiple things, use the plural forms одни и те же or те же самые, ensuring they agree in case with the plural noun they modify.
