Questions & Answers about Он интересуется тремястами блюдами с высоким содержанием жира и витаминов.
Why is "three hundred" written as тремястами here?
Тремястами is the Instrumental case of триста (three hundred). When declining hundreds in Russian, both halves of the word change. The first part declines like the number "three" (тремя) and the second part declines like "hundreds" (стами). We use the Instrumental case here because the verb интересоваться (to be interested in) always requires it.
Why is блюдами in the Instrumental plural? Don't numbers like 300 trigger the Genitive case?
If this phrase were the subject or direct object (Nominative or Accusative), триста would indeed force the noun into the Genitive plural (триста блюд). However, in oblique cases (any case other than Nominative or Accusative), the number and the noun simply agree in case. Since the verb forces the number into the Instrumental (тремястами), the noun just tags along in the Instrumental plural (блюдами).
Why are we using the Instrumental case for высоким содержанием?
The preposition с takes the Instrumental case when it means "with", as in "dishes with a high content". Therefore, the neuter noun содержание (content) becomes содержанием, and its matching adjective высокое (high) becomes высоким.
Why do жира and витаминов take the Genitive case here?
They express the English "of", answering the question "content of what?". To show this relationship, жир (fat) is put in the Genitive singular (жира), and витамины (vitamins) is put in the Genitive plural (витаминов).
