Questions & Answers about В коробке спали двое котят и один щенок.
Why does the sentence use двое instead of the normal word for two (два)?
Collective numerals like двое are commonly used when counting young animals, such as kittens or puppies. While два котёнка is grammatically possible, двое котят is the natural phrasing native speakers prefer.
What case is котят in, and why?
It is in the genitive plural. When you use collective numerals like двое, трое, or четверо in the nominative case (as the subject of the sentence), the noun that follows them must always take the genitive plural.
The dictionary form for kitten is котёнок. How exactly does it become котят?
Words for baby animals that end in -онок or -ёнок have an irregular plural. First, the nominative plural of котёнок is котята. To form the genitive plural from that, you drop the final -а, leaving just котят.
Why didn't we use a collective numeral for the puppy (щенок)?
Because there is only one! Collective numerals are used to describe groups, starting at two (двое, трое, etc.). For a single puppy, you just use the standard number один along with the nominative singular noun щенок.
