Questions & Answers about Эпоха нового строительства продолжалась с две тысячи первого до две тысячи двенадцатого года.
Why does две тысячи stay the same while первого changes its ending after с?
When talking about years, Russian uses ordinal numbers (like "the 2001st year"). For compound ordinal numbers, only the very last word declines! The preposition с (from) requires the Genitive case, so only "first" changes to первого. The thousands and hundreds (две тысячи) remain in their base Nominative form.
Could I put the word года after 2001 as well, or is that wrong?
You could grammatically say с две тысячи первого года до..., but it sounds clunky and repetitive. In Russian, when expressing a continuous range of years, it is standard and much more natural to omit the first года and only use it once at the very end of the phrase.
What triggers the Genitive case in нового строительства?
It is the possessive use of the Genitive case, replacing the English word "of". To express "the era of new construction", Russian puts новое строительство into the Genitive case to link it directly to the noun Эпоха (era).
Why use the imperfective verb продолжалась (lasted) here instead of a perfective verb?
The imperfective aspect is used because the sentence focuses on a continuous process happening over a block of time. Whenever you emphasize the duration of an ongoing action or state (here, an 11-year span), you use an imperfective verb.
