Questions & Answers about Я иду в парк и отправляю фотографию брату.
Why is it брату and not just брат?
Брат (brother) is the indirect object here—the person receiving the photo. In Russian, we use the Dative case for this. For masculine nouns ending in a consonant like брат, we add -у to the end, making it брату (to a brother).
Why does фотография change to фотографию?
It changes because it is the direct object of the verb отправляю (sending). The photo is the thing being acted upon, which requires the Accusative case. For feminine nouns ending in -я, the Accusative ending changes to -ю.
If в парк means 'to the park', why doesn't парк have a Dative ending like брату?
When you express motion towards a place using в (to/into), you must use the Accusative case, not the Dative case. Since парк is an inanimate masculine noun, its Accusative form looks exactly the same as its dictionary form. We only use the Dative case for destinations when going towards a person, not a place.
Why use иду instead of another word for going, like хожу?
Иду specifically means you are walking in one direction right now. If you were going by a vehicle (like a bus or car), you would use a different verb entirely. If you were talking about walking to the park regularly as a habit, you would use хожу.
The English translation says 'to my brother', but I do not see a word for 'my' in the Russian sentence.
In Russian, possessive pronouns like 'my' are often left out if it is obvious from the context. Since you are the one doing the sending, it is naturally assumed you are sending it to your own brother.
