Questions & Answers about Caligrafia este o artă migăloasă, dar oricum îmi place.
Why do we use dar oricum together here? Doesn't oricum already mean 'anyway'?
Yes, oricum means 'anyway', but pairing it with dar (but) strongly emphasizes the contrast. While dar introduces the opposition, adding oricum acts as a pragmatic marker showing that the first fact (it being meticulous) absolutely does not change the speaker's feeling. It functions much like 'but nevertheless' or 'but I like it regardless' in English.
Can I place oricum at the end of the sentence, like in the English translation 'I like it anyway'?
Yes, you can say dar îmi place oricum. Both word orders are perfectly natural in Romanian. Placing oricum right after dar puts slightly more emphasis on the contrast itself, whereas putting it at the end feels a bit more casual.
What kind of 'meticulous' is migăloasă?
The adjective migăloasă comes from the noun migală, which refers to painstaking, highly detailed manual work. It is the perfect word for crafts like calligraphy, embroidery, or watchmaking, carrying a much heavier implication of taking a lot of time and patience than a generic word for 'careful' would.
Why does Caligrafia have a definite article (-a) when the English translation just says 'Calligraphy'?
In Romanian, abstract nouns and general concepts (like art forms, sciences, or ideals) almost always take the definite article when they act as the subject of a sentence. English usually drops the article for these general concepts, but Romanian requires it to grammatically anchor the subject.
