Questions & Answers about Vreau jumătate de kilogram de telemea de la această tarabă.
Why do we need de after jumătate here?
In Romanian, fractions like jumătate (half) and sfert (quarter) act like quantities. When a quantity is followed by a noun, you must connect them with the preposition de (of). So, while English says "half a kilogram", Romanian literally says "half of kilogram" (jumătate de kilogram).
There are three des in this sentence! Is it normal to chain them like jumătate de kilogram de telemea?
Yes, it is very common! The first de connects the fraction to the measurement (jumătate de kilogram = half of a kilogram), and the second de connects the measurement to the actual item (kilogram de telemea = kilogram of telemea). Romanian does not mind repeating de in these quantity chains.
Why is it de la această tarabă instead of din această tarabă for "from this stall"?
We use de la when talking about getting something from a general location, a person, or an open surface like a tarabă (market stall). You would use din (out of) if you were physically taking something from inside an enclosed space, like a box or a closed shop (din magazin).
Why is it această tarabă and not taraba aceasta?
Both mean "this stall" and are completely correct. When the demonstrative word (această) comes before the noun, the noun drops its definite article (tarabă). If it comes after, the noun must have the definite article attached to the end (taraba aceasta). Placing it before is just slightly more formal or emphatic.
