Questions & Answers about Cum este vremea astăzi?
Why does vremea have an 'a' at the end?
The base word for 'weather' is vreme. In Romanian, the word for 'the' is attached to the end of the noun instead of being a separate word before it. To say 'the weather', you add '-a' to the end, making it vremea.
Can I use azi instead of astăzi?
Yes, absolutely! Both azi and astăzi mean 'today'. They are completely interchangeable, but you will hear azi a lot in everyday spoken Romanian because it is shorter.
Is the word order always question word + verb + subject?
Usually, yes. Just like in English, Romanian questions often place the verb (este) right after the question word (Cum) and before the subject (vremea). Saying Cum vremea este astăzi? would sound unnatural.
Does vreme also mean 'time'?
Yes, vreme is a word with two meanings. It can mean 'weather' or 'time' (as in a period of time, like 'a long time ago'). However, if you want to ask 'What time is it?' by the clock, you would use a different word, ora.
