How is the Weather?
To ask about or describe the weather, you will use the feminine noun vremea (the weather).
| How is the weather today? | Cum este vremea astăzi? |
| The weather is very beautiful. | Vremea este foarte frumoasă. |
Warm and Cold
When describing temperatures generally, you can use the word cald (warm). However, because vremea is a feminine noun, you must use the feminine form caldă when describing the weather directly. The adjective rece (cold) has the same form for both masculine and feminine nouns.
| Today it is warm outside. | Astăzi este cald afară. |
| The weather is not warm now. | Vremea nu este caldă acum. |
| In the morning, the weather is cold. | Dimineața, vremea este rece. |
The Sun and the Wind
The Romanian word for "the sun" is soarele, and "the wind" is vântul. Both of these have the definite article ("the") attached to the end.
| The sun is big and warm. | Soarele este mare și cald. |
| The wind is cold at night. | Vântul este rece noaptea. |
To say that the wind is blowing, use the verb bate (to blow).
| The wind blows outside. | Afară bate vântul. |
Rain and Snow
The nouns ploaia (the rain) and zăpada (the snow) are both feminine and end with the attached definite article -a.
| The rain is cold in November. | Ploaia este rece în noiembrie. |
| The snow is very clean. | Zăpada este foarte curată. |
Romanian has specific verbs for when it rains or snows: plouă (it rains) and ninge (it snows). These are used on their own without a pronoun, just like in English.
| Today it rains a lot in the city. | Astăzi plouă mult în oraș. |
| In December it snows often. | În decembrie ninge des. |
