Questions & Answers about El merge la școală.
Why do we use la here for "to", and when would I use în instead?
la is used for going "to" a general location, institution, or event, like școală (school) or muncă (work). You would use în when you are specifically going "inside" an enclosed space or traveling to a country or region, like în casă (into the house) or în România (to Romania).
Does the word școală change its ending because it comes after la?
No, it stays in its basic dictionary form. Even though the preposition la requires the "accusative case" (a grammar term for the target of an action or preposition), for most nouns in Romanian, this form is completely identical to the basic dictionary word.
Why is it la școală and not la școala (with the definite article "the" attached)?
Just like in English where we say "He goes to school" rather than "to the school", Romanian drops the definite article after prepositions like la, în, and din when talking about a general destination. You only use the attached article if you are describing a specific school, like "to the school in my neighborhood".
I know the dictionary form of the verb is a merge (to go). Why does it end in "e" here?
