Setting Limits: Until
To express "until", use până or până când. These denote the limit of an action and are followed by a verb in the indicative mood (standard tenses).
| I will place the flowerpot here until the light is perfect. | O să așez ghiveciul aici până când lumina e perfectă. |
| We water the seedling until it grows big. | Udăm răsadul până crește mare. |
Anteriority: By the Time / Before
To express that something happens before another event ("by the time" or "before"), use până să. Because of the conjunction să, the verb that follows must be in the subjunctive mood.
| By the time the seed sprouts, you need a lot of patience. | Ai nevoie de multă răbdare până să răsară sămânța. |
| By the time the stem grew, an insect had already eaten a leaf. | Până să crească tulpina, o insectă mâncase deja o frunză. |
Comparing the Two
As your plant develops a root (rădăcina), a stem (tulpina), and leaves, choose your time phrase carefully: până or până când for "until" (followed by the indicative), and până să for "by the time" or "before" (followed by the subjunctive).
| We will water the soil until the first leaf comes out. | O să udăm pământul până când iese prima frunză. |
| By the time the root develops, we must take care of the flower very well. | Până să se dezvolte rădăcina, trebuie să îngrijim floarea foarte bine. |
| I water the pot until the stem grows. | Ud ghiveciul până când crește tulpina. |
| Before it blooms, it needs light. | Până să înflorească, are nevoie de lumină. |
