Singular Negative Commands
To give a negative command to a single person informally in Romanian, simply place the word nu before the bare infinitive of the verb.
The bare infinitive is the dictionary form of the verb, without the particle a.
| Infinitive | Negative Command | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| a atinge | Nu atinge! | Do not touch! |
| a fotografia | Nu fotografia! | Do not photograph! |
| a folosi | Nu folosi! | Do not use! |
Here is how a museum guide might give these instructions to a visitor:
| The guide says: Do not touch the statue! | Ghidul spune: Nu atinge statuia! |
| Do not photograph the sculpture with the flash! | Nu fotografia sculptura cu blițul! |
| Do not use the flash here! | Nu folosi blițul aici! |
Reflexive Verbs
For reflexive verbs, place the second-person singular reflexive pronoun te (yourself) between nu and the infinitive.
- a se apropia (to approach) -> Nu te apropia! (Do not approach!)
| Do not approach the old statue, please! | Nu te apropia de statuia veche, te rog! |
Direct Object Pronouns
When replacing a noun with a direct object pronoun (like "it"), place the short-form pronoun between nu and the verb.
Use o for a feminine noun (like statuia) and îl for a masculine or neuter noun (like exponatul).
| The statue is here. Do not touch it! | Statuia este aici. Nu o atinge! |
| The guide presents the exhibit. Do not touch it! | Ghidul prezintă exponatul. Nu îl atinge! |
