Immediate anteriority (de îndată ce, imediat ce)

Expressing "As Soon As"

In fast-paced scenarios like day trading, timing is everything. To express that one action follows instantly after another, Romanian uses the phrases imediat ce and de îndată ce. Both translate to "as soon as".

They are followed by the indicative mood, meaning you simply use standard verb tenses like the present or past.

Using "Imediat ce"

Imediat ce combines imediat (immediately) and ce (that).

I buy the dollar as soon as the quote drops.
Cumpăr dolarul imediat ce cotația scade.
He trades as soon as the market opens.
El tranzacționează imediat ce se deschide piața.

Using "De îndată ce"

De îndată ce is a perfect synonym for imediat ce. It is slightly more formal but used interchangeably.

I call my broker as soon as I check the chart.
Îl sun pe brokerul meu de îndată ce verific graficul.
Did you call your broker as soon as the transaction got blocked?
L-ai sunat pe brokerul tău de îndată ce tranzacția s-a blocat?

Clause Placement

Just like in English, clauses introduced by imediat ce or de îndată ce can sit in the middle of the sentence or at the very beginning. When starting the sentence with "as soon as", separate the two actions with a comma.

As soon as we notice the loss, we sell the whole portfolio.
De îndată ce observăm pierderea, vindem tot portofoliul.
The broker sells the portfolio as soon as the transaction becomes risky.
Brokerul vinde portofoliul imediat ce tranzacția devine riscantă.
Do not trade as soon as you see a red chart!
Nu tranzacționați imediat ce vedeți un grafic roșu!
