When you want to say "of this house" or "to that client," use the Genitive/Dative forms of demonstrative adjectives.
When a demonstrative adjective comes before a noun, it takes the Genitive/Dative ending, and the noun stays in its simple, indefinite form (without a definite article).
| Meaning | Masculine / Neuter | Feminine | Plural (All Genders) |
|---|---|---|---|
| This / These | acestui | acestei | acestor |
| That / Those | acelui | acelei | acelor |
"This" and "That" (Singular)
For masculine and neuter nouns, use acestui ("of/to this") and acelui ("of/to that").
| The owner of this land is young. | Proprietarul acestui teren este tânăr. |
| The price of that land is low. | Prețul acelui teren este mic. |
For feminine nouns, use acestei and acelei.
| The value of this house is very high. | Valoarea acestei case este foarte mare. |
| The door of that room is open. | Ușa acelei camere este deschisă. |
Plural Demonstratives
In the plural, gender no longer matters. Use acestor for "of/to these" and acelor for "of/to those".
| We need the owner of these apartments. | Avem nevoie de proprietarul acestor apartamente. |
| I sent an e-mail to the owner of those hotels. | I-am trimis un e-mail proprietarului acelor hoteluri. |
Using Demonstratives in the Dative
Because the Genitive and Dative cases share the exact same forms in Romanian, you use these identical demonstratives to point out the recipient of an action.
Notice how the plural Dative pronoun le (to them) pairs up with the demonstratives acestor and acelor:
| We offered coffee to these clients. | Le-am oferit cafea acestor clienți. |
| Did you send the contract to those lawyers? | Le-ați trimis contractul acelor avocați? |
