Tools of the Trade

Let's bake something sweet! When mixing ingredients by hand, you will often use the whisk (telul).

Put the sugar and beat the cream with the whisk!
Pune zahărul și bate crema cu telul!

For a smooth batter, it is best to sift (a cerne) your dry ingredients first. Notice the phrase înainte să (before) in the following example, which connects two actions and triggers the subjunctive mood.

Sift the flour before you prepare the dough!
Cerne făina înainte să pregătești aluatul!

Making the Dough

For bread and specific pastries, you will need yeast (drojdia) to help the dough rise.

The yeast helps the dough to grow very fast.
Drojdia ajută aluatul să crească foarte repede.

Once your ingredients are mixed, it's time to knead (a frământa).

Before you knead, you must add the yeast into the milk.
Înainte să frămânți, trebuie să adaugi drojdia în lapte.

To flatten the dough, use a rolling pin (sucitorul). Note the phrase după ce, which expresses that one action happens "after" another.

After she kneads, the woman uses the rolling pin.
După ce frământă, femeia folosește sucitorul.

Flavors and Toppings

You might need to melt (a topi) butter to add richness, or use cocoa (cacaua) for chocolate treats.

The little girl melts the butter and then puts the cocoa in the bowl.
Fetița topește untul și apoi pune cacaua în castron.

For a classic sweet aroma, a touch of vanilla (vanilia) is perfect.

The woman adds the vanilla before she serves the cake.
Femeia adaugă vanilia înainte să servească tortul.

Finally, no cake is complete without the glaze (glazura).

We pour the glaze on the cake only after we take it out of the oven.
Turnăm glazura pe tort doar după ce îl scoatem din cuptor.
