At home (garsonieră, living, parter)

Where you live

A garsonieră is a one-room flat — the classic first home in a Romanian city. Most people live in a bloc (apartment building), on the parter (ground floor) or on an etaj.

I live in a studio apartment.
Locuiesc într-o garsonieră.
We live on the ground floor.
Locuim la parter.
The grandparents live on the ground floor, and we live on the second floor.
Bunicii locuiesc la parter, iar noi la etajul doi.

Rooms and furniture

Livingul is the modern word for the living room (you already know sufrageria). After în and la the article drops: în living, la parter. When you need the bathroom in a café, ask for toaleta.

In the evening we sit in the living room.
Seara stăm în living.
The phone is on the nightstand.
Telefonul este pe noptieră.
Where is the restroom, please?
Unde este toaleta, vă rog?

Full and empty

Plin (full) is regular. Gol (empty) changes its vowel in the feminine and loses its l in the masculine plural:

m.f.m. pl.f. pl.
fullplinplinăplinipline
emptygolgoalăgoigoale

Plin de means full of.

The bottle is empty, but the glass is full.
Sticla este goală, dar paharul este plin.
The closet is full of clothes.
Dulapul este plin de haine.

Paper and dishes

Hârtia is paper as a material, and hârtia igienică is toilet paper. A vas is a pot or a dish; in the plural, vasele are the dishes.

We have to buy toilet paper.
Trebuie să cumpărăm hârtie igienică.
The pot of soup is on the stove.
Vasul cu supă este pe aragaz.
I put the dishes in the cupboard.
Am pus vasele în dulap.

Într-un, într-o

În + un / o is always written as one word with a hyphen: într-un, într-o (and dintr-un, printr-o the same way).

I live in a studio apartment.
Locuiesc într-o garsonieră.
I put the paper in a cupboard.
Pun hârtia într-un dulap.
