Questions & Answers about O rascunho do relatório está escrito.
I thought past participles for -er verbs usually ended in -ido. Why is it escrito instead of "escrevido"?
The verb escrever (to write) has an irregular past participle. Instead of following the normal rule, it becomes escrito (written). It is one of a few highly common irregular participles you just have to memorize, alongside words like feito (done/made) and visto (seen).
If the sentence was about a letter (a carta) instead of a draft, would escrito change?
Yes! When a past participle is used like an adjective to describe a state, it has to match the gender and number of the noun it describes. Since o rascunho (the draft) is masculine singular, we use escrito. If it were a carta (the letter), the sentence would be: A carta está escrita.
Why do we use está here instead of é?
We use está (from estar) because we are describing the current state or condition of the draft resulting from an action. The draft is now in a "written" state. If you used é (from ser), it would sound like a passive, ongoing routine action, like "it gets written every week".
Why is it do relatório and not just de relatório?
In Portuguese, you usually include the definite article (the) before nouns. So we don't just say "the draft of report", but "the draft of the report" (o relatório). The preposition de (of) merges with the masculine article o (the) to form the contraction do.
