Irregular past participles as adjectives (aberto, feito)

Irregular Past Participles

Many common Portuguese verbs have irregular past participles. Use these forms with estar to describe the status or condition of a noun.

When used as adjectives, past participles must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe.

The first task is already done.
A primeira tarefa já está feita.
The draft of the report is written.
O rascunho do relatório está escrito.
The fourth draft is seen and revised.
O quarto rascunho está visto e revisto.

Notice how the endings change for plural nouns:

Are the documents printed?
Os documentos estão impressos?

And for feminine nouns:

The third task is still open.
A terceira tarefa ainda está aberta.

In Portugal, the adjective form of aceitar is aceite. Because it ends in -e, it has the same form for masculine and feminine nouns.

Is the proposal accepted?
A proposta está aceite?

If referring to a general idea or an unspecified "it," default to the masculine singular form (-o).

What is said, is said.
O que está dito, está dito.
