Question 1

Why does the surname end in -skiej here?

Accepted Answer

The base surname is Zielińska, which is the feminine form of Zieliński. The preposition dla (for) always requires the Genitive case. Because Polish surnames ending in -ska decline exactly like adjectives, Zielińska changes to Zielińskiej in the Genitive.

Question 2

What if her surname was a noun-based name like Nowak instead of Zielińska?

Accepted Answer

If a woman's surname does not end in an adjective suffix like -ska or -cka (for example, Nowak or Kowal), it is completely indeclinable. You would simply say dla pani Nowak, and the unchangeable surname would just follow the title.

Question 3

Why does the word pani look like it hasn't changed case after dla?

Accepted Answer

It actually is in the Genitive case, but the Genitive form of pani is identical to its basic dictionary form. You will see pani stay exactly the same in most grammatical cases, changing only in the Accusative and Instrumental where it becomes panią.

Question 4

We are saying we don't have a recommendation. Why is polecenia in the Genitive case instead of the Accusative?

Accepted Answer

This is due to the negative Genitive rule. The positive verb mamy (we have) takes the Accusative case, but as soon as you add nie to make it nie mamy, the direct object must flip to the Genitive case. The basic neuter noun polecenie becomes polecenia.

Question 5

The translation says "recommendation", but can polecenie mean something else?

Accepted Answer

Yes. While it means "recommendation" here, polecenie is very often used to mean a "command", "instruction", or "order" given by a boss, a teacher, or even a computer system.
