From Lesson 235:Reported speech (że)·Polish

Questions & Answers about Czy słyszałeś, że ta aktorka podobno jest w ciąży?

In English, we often say 'Did you hear that she was pregnant?'. Why does the Polish sentence use the present tense 'jest' (is)?
This is a key difference between Polish and English reported speech! In English, when the main verb is in the past tense ('heard'), we usually shift the reported verb to the past tense ('was') too. Polish does not do this backshifting. You just use the tense the person originally thought or said. Since the rumor is 'she is pregnant', Polish keeps it as jest even after the past tense słyszałeś.
Why is 'pregnant' translated as 'w ciąży'? Is there a normal adjective for it?
In Polish, the standard way to say someone is pregnant is literally to say they are 'in pregnancy' (w ciąży). Ciąża means 'pregnancy', and here it takes the Locative case after the preposition w. There is an adjective, brzemienna, but it sounds very formal or old-fashioned; everyday Polish almost always uses the phrase w ciąży.
What does 'podobno' add to the sentence, and can I change its position?
Podobno means 'apparently', 'supposedly', or 'allegedly'. It shows that you are passing on gossip or information you heard but can't guarantee is true. Polish word order is flexible, so you could also say że podobno ta aktorka jest w ciąży or że ta aktorka jest podobno w ciąży. Placing it right before jest naturally highlights that the state of being pregnant is the unconfirmed rumor.
Why is it 'ta aktorka' and not 'tą aktorką' after the verb?
Ta aktorka is the subject of its own clause (the part of the sentence after że), so it must be in the basic Nominative case. You would only use the Instrumental case (tą aktorką) if you were describing who someone is, for example: Ona jest tą aktorką (She is that actress). Here, she is the subject of the clause, so she stays in the Nominative.
