Questions & Answers about Uważaj, ta skała jest bardzo śliska!
How does the word uważaj work here, and what is its dictionary form?
Uważaj is the informal imperative (command) form of the imperfective verb uważać (to pay attention / to be careful). For many verbs ending in -ać, you form the command by taking the 'you' form (uważasz) and replacing the ending with -j, giving you the direct command 'watch out!' or 'be careful!'.
Could I use the word kamień instead of skała for 'rock' in this sentence?
Probably not. While both can translate to 'rock' or 'stone' in English, skała refers to a large geological formation, a cliff face, or solid bedrock—the kind of large rock you climb or hike on. A kamień is a smaller, loose stone that you could pick up in your hand or kick with your foot.
Does the adjective śliska (slippery) relate to any verbs for slipping or sliding?
Yes! The adjective śliski (masculine) or śliska (feminine) shares a root with verbs like ślizgać się (to slide or slip) and the perfective ześlizgnąć się (to slip down). Given your current lesson on downward motion, a slippery rock is exactly the kind of hazard that causes a sudden, downward slip!
As a refresher, why do we use ta instead of to before skała?
Skała is a feminine noun, so the word for 'this' modifying it must be the feminine pronoun ta. You would use to if you were making a general identification statement, like To jest bardzo śliska skała (This is a very slippery rock). But since 'this rock' acts as a specific subject here, the demonstrative pronoun must match the noun's gender.
