Questions & Answers about Czy to twój pierwszy wyjazd za granicę?
How does the noun wyjazd relate to the wy- prefix we are learning?
Wyjazd means a trip, journey, or departure. It comes directly from the perfective verb wyjechać (to leave or drive out). The prefix wy- means 'out,' and the core jazd relates to riding or driving (like in jechać). So, a wyjazd is literally the act of riding out of a place!
Why is it za granicę instead of za granicą?
We use the accusative case granicę when there is motion or direction involved, answering the question 'where to?'. Even though wyjazd is a noun, it strongly implies the motion of leaving and going somewhere. If you were talking about already being abroad (a fixed location), you would use the instrumental case: za granicą.
Why don't we need a verb like jest (is) in this sentence?
In Polish, when you equate 'this' with a noun phrase (like 'your first trip'), you can often just use to without adding the verb jest. The structure Czy to... is a very natural and common way to ask 'Is this...' or 'Is that...'.
Why are twój and pierwszy in the masculine form?
Adjectives and pronouns must match the gender of the noun they describe. Wyjazd ends in a consonant, which makes it a masculine noun. Therefore, 'your' (twój) and 'first' (pierwszy) take their masculine nominative forms to match it.
