Questions & Answers about Jestem z małym dzieckiem.
Why is there no word for "I" before jestem?
In Polish, the verb ending already tells you who is doing the action. Jestem specifically means "I am." You can say Ja jestem, but the word Ja (I) is usually dropped unless you want to emphasize it.
Why did the basic phrase małe dziecko (small child) change to małym dzieckiem?
The preposition z (when it means "with") forces the following noun and adjective to change their endings to match the Instrumental case. Because of this grammatical rule, the neuter adjective małe changes to małym, and the noun dziecko changes to dzieckiem.
Why does dziecko take the ending -iem (dzieckiem) instead of the regular -em?
When a neuter or masculine noun has a k or g right before its final vowel, it takes -iem in the Instrumental case instead of the standard -em to make it easier to pronounce. That is why the -ko in dziecko turns into -kiem.
