Questions & Answers about Wczoraj padał duży grad i zniszczył nam warzywa w ogrodzie.
Why does this sentence use the masculine verbs padał and zniszczył instead of the impersonal neuter forms being taught in this lesson?
Because the sentence has an explicit grammatical subject: duży grad (large hail), which is a masculine noun. The impersonal neuter construction (like zniszczyło nam warzywa) is used when there is no specific subject and you want to express that a general force of nature did it. Since this sentence names the hail as the direct cause, the verbs must agree with its masculine gender.
Could we rewrite this sentence to use the impersonal neuter form?
Why do we use the dative pronoun nam instead of the possessive nasze (our vegetables)?
While zniszczył nasze warzywa is grammatically correct, using the dative of interest (nam) is much more natural in Polish. It highlights that you are directly affected by the action, giving a sense of 'it ruined the vegetables on us'. This structure is very common when talking about uncontrollable events happening to your property.
Is padać the standard verb for hail, just like it is for rain and snow?
Yes, padać is the universal verb for precipitation in Polish. You use it for rain (pada deszcz), snow (pada śnieg), and hail (pada grad). Because grad is a masculine noun, the past tense verb here takes the masculine form padał.
