Questions & Answers about Zwierzęta muszą przystosować się, żeby równowaga nie zniknęła.
Why is zniknęła in the past tense if the English translation says "does not disappear" in the present tense?
When expressing purpose with żeby (so that), Polish requires the verb in the dependent clause to take past tense endings if the subjects of the two clauses are different. Since the first subject is zwierzęta (animals) and the second is równowaga (balance), the past tense form zniknęła must be used.
Why use the perfective verb przystosować się after muszą instead of the imperfective przystosowywać się?
Modal verbs like musieć (must) can take either aspect. Using the perfective przystosować się focuses on the completed result of the action (successfully achieving adaptation), rather than the ongoing process of trying to adapt.
Could I put się before przystosować, like Zwierzęta muszą się przystosować?
Yes, that is equally correct and very natural. The pronoun się is quite flexible in its placement. It generally avoids the very beginning or the very end of a clause when possible, but both muszą przystosować się and muszą się przystosować are perfectly fine here.
What is the base form of zniknęła, and why does the vowel change?
The infinitive is zniknąć (to disappear). In the past tense, verbs with this ending often change the nasal vowel ą to ę in the feminine, neuter, and non-virile plural forms. Here, it becomes zniknęła to agree with the feminine noun równowaga (balance).
