Spontaneous changes (się)

Actions vs. Spontaneous Changes

In English, we often use the exact same verb whether someone actively changes an object, or the object undergoes a change on its own. For example, "I broke the pencil" versus "The pencil broke."

In Polish, verbs that describe physical changes—like breaking, shattering, or burning—are normally transitive. They describe someone or something performing an action on a direct object. Often, these actions happen przypadkiem (by accident).

by accident
przypadkiem
Who accidentally shattered this new vase?
Kto przypadkiem stłukł ten nowy wazon?
He broke the pencil into two parts.
On złamał ołówek na dwie części.

The Spontaneous "się"

If the object undergoes the change spontaneously, accidentally, or without a direct actor, you must add the reflexive particle się. This changes the verb's focus from an action performed on something to a state change that the object undergoes.

To emphasize that the object underwent this change without human intervention, you will frequently see the word sam (by itself / on its own).

My pencil broke by itself.
Mój ołówek sam się złamał.
The glass shattered by accident.
Szkło stłukło się przypadkiem.

Comparing Actions and Reactions

This pattern applies to almost any physical transformation or reaction. When a person or outside force causes the change, use the base verb. When the material or object changes state "on its own," add się.

Spilling (wylać / wylać się)

She spilled the coffee by accident.
Ona przypadkiem wylała kawę.
The soup spilled on the table.
Zupa wylała się na stół.

Burning (spalić / spalić się)

I wanted you to burn these documents.
Chciałem, żebyś spalił te dokumenty.
The dinner burnt completely.
Obiad spalił się całkowicie.

Shrinking (skurczyć / skurczyć się)

Why did you shrink my favorite sweater?
Dlaczego skurczyłeś mój ulubiony sweter?
This sweater is smaller now because it shrunk.
Ten sweter jest teraz mniejszy, bo się skurczył.

Tearing (podrzeć / podrzeć się)

The bad dog tore my shoe.
Zły pies podarł mój but.
I know this material and I know that it tore by itself.
Znam ten materiał i wiem, że sam się podarł.

Slamming (zatrzasnąć / zatrzasnąć się)

I don't want you to slam the door.
Nie chcę, żebyś zatrzasnął drzwi.
The door slammed because there was a strong wind.
Drzwi zatrzasnęły się, bo był silny wiatr.
