Feminine Professional Titles (Feminatywy)

In modern Polish, it is standard to use feminine equivalents for professional titles and roles. The most frequent way to form these is by adding the suffix -ka to the masculine noun.

For many professions, you simply add -ka directly to the end of the masculine word. If the masculine word ends in -a (like programista), replace the final -a with -ka (programistka).

This director is so ambitious that she quickly achieved success.
Ta dyrektorka jest tak ambitna, że szybko osiągnęła sukces.
The new president manages the company and supports other women.
Nowa prezeska zarządza firmą i wspiera inne kobiety.
This programmer is fast enough that she finished the app yesterday.
Ta programistka jest na tyle szybka, że skończyła aplikację wczoraj.

Spelling Changes

Depending on the ending of the masculine noun, adding the suffix can cause predictable consonant changes:

  • Nouns ending in -ik or -yk change to -iczka or -yczka (e.g., kierownik → kierowniczka, polityk → polityczka, prawnik → prawniczka).
  • Nouns ending in -g change to -żka (e.g., psycholog → psycholożka).
  • Nouns ending in -arz change to -arka (e.g., dziennikarz → dziennikarka).
Since this manager is great, our department has no problems.
Ponieważ ta kierowniczka jest świetna, nasz dział nie ma problemów.
This politician is so brave that she loudly criticizes the old system.
Ta polityczka jest tak odważna, że głośno krytykuje stary system.
Since this psychologist is very patient, patients gladly visit her.
Ponieważ ta psycholożka jest bardzo cierpliwa, pacjenci chętnie ją odwiedzają.

Using Feminine Titles

These forms are regular nouns and decline like any other feminine noun ending in -a.

A famous journalist writes about the successes of women in business.
Znana dziennikarka pisze o sukcesach kobiet w biznesie.
This expert has enough experience that everyone trusts her.
Ta ekspertka ma na tyle duże doświadczenie, że wszyscy jej ufają.
This architect worked well enough that she designed a modern estate.
Ta architektka pracowała na tyle dobrze, że zaprojektowała nowoczesne osiedle.
