Duration prefix (prze-)

The Duration Prefix prze-

The prefix prze- can be attached to many Polish verbs to emphasize that an action lasted continuously through an entire block of time. It translates well to English phrases using "through" or "out" (like sleeping through the winter, or waiting out a storm).

Because the focus is on the period of time being consumed or spanned, the time expression following these verbs takes the Accusative case. You will very often see these verbs paired with the adjective cały (whole/entire) in the Accusative as well.

You can see that you slept through the whole weekend.
Widać, że przespałeś cały weekend.
This bear slept through the whole winter in the cave.
Ten niedźwiedź przespał całą zimę w jaskini.
We danced through the whole night and we are exhausted.
Przetańczyliśmy całą noc i jesteśmy wyczerpani.

Waiting and Conversing

This prefix is highly productive. You can use it to talk about letting a bad situation pass by "waiting it out" (przeczekać), or spending a period of time engrossed in conversation (przegadać).

You can hear the storm, so we have to wait it out here.
Słychać burzę, więc musimy ją tu przeczekać.
We talked through the whole evening with the neighbor.
Przegadaliśmy z sąsiadem cały wieczór.

Postures Over Time

You can also combine prze- with verbs of posture, like siedzieć (to sit) or leżeć (to lie down). This creates verbs like przesiedzieć and przeleżeć, which mean "to spend a period of time sitting" or "to spend a period of time lying down" (for example, when sick in bed).

The thief spent a whole decade in prison.
Złodziej przesiedział w więzieniu całą dekadę.
Since you are sick, you should spend the whole week lying in bed.
Skoro jesteś chory, powinieneś przeleżeć cały tydzień w łóżku.

Working, Emoting, and Surviving

This pattern extends to almost any continuous activity. You can work through the night (przepracować), cry through a sad movie (przepłakać), or stay completely silent through a meeting (przemilczeć).

When combined with the verb żyć (to live), the resulting verb przeżyć means to "live through" or "survive" a difficult period.

My boss worked through the whole night and still has energy.
Mój szef przepracował całą noc i wciąż ma energię.
I cried through both films, even though I rarely cry.
Przepłakałem oba filmy, chociaż rzadko płaczę.
He stayed silent through the whole meeting, which was strange.
Przemilczał całe spotkanie, co było dziwne.
Our grandparents survived the whole war.
Nasi dziadkowie przeżyli całą wojnę.
