Framing with Participles
In Polish, you can set the tone or scope of your sentence using fixed participial phrases. The two most common building blocks are mówiąc (speaking) and rzecz biorąc (literally "taking the matter into account," but naturally translated as "speaking").
These framing expressions usually sit at the very beginning of your sentence, separated by a comma, to prepare the listener for the appraisal that follows.
| Honestly speaking, this project is a disaster. | Szczerze mówiąc, ten projekt to katastrofa. |
| Generally speaking, half of the workers agree. | Ogólnie rzecz biorąc, połowa pracowników się zgadza. |
Speaking Candidly
You can pair mówiąc with various adverbs—or even a noun—to signal exactly how strictly, gently, or honestly you are assessing a situation.
| Strictly speaking, he is not our boss. | Ściśle mówiąc, on nie jest naszym szefem. |
| To put it mildly, it was an awful movie. | Delikatnie mówiąc, to był okropny film. |
| To tell the truth, I forgot about her. | Prawdę mówiąc, zapomniałem o niej. |
Drawing Conclusions
To frame a statement based on outside evidence, use the participle sądząc (judging). It is typically followed by the preposition po (by), which requires the noun or pronoun that follows to be in the Locative case.
| Judging by the reviews, the food is awful. | Sądząc po recenzjach, jedzenie jest okropne. |
Analytical Frames with "rzecz biorąc"
The fixed phrase rzecz biorąc is highly versatile for summarizing complex situations. By simply changing the adverb in front of it, you can effortlessly shift between objective, theoretical, practical, or realistic lenses for your statement.
| Objectively speaking, this option is better. | Obiektywnie rzecz biorąc, ta opcja jest lepsza. |
| Theoretically speaking, everything is based on logic. | Teoretycznie rzecz biorąc, wszystko opiera się na logice. |
| Practically speaking, this changes nothing. | Praktycznie rzecz biorąc, niczego to nie zmienia. |
| Realistically speaking, we won't finish this today. | Realistycznie rzecz biorąc, nie skończymy tego dzisiaj. |
