Questions & Answers about Lavoriamo per comprare una casa.
Where is the word for "we" in this sentence?
In Italian, the subject pronoun (noi meaning "we") is usually left out because the ending of the verb already tells us who is doing the action. The -iamo ending on lavoriamo means "we work".
Why is the word per used here? Doesn't it mean "for"?
While per often means "for", when it comes right before an infinitive verb (the dictionary form), it means "in order to". So per comprare means "in order to buy" or simply "to buy".
Why isn't the verb comprare conjugated to match "we" like lavoriamo is?
In Italian, whenever you put a verb immediately after a preposition like per, you must use the infinitive (the un-conjugated dictionary form ending in -are, -ere, or -ire). You only need to conjugate the main verb (lavoriamo) to match the subject.
